Creation of a wilderness reserve in the Southern Carpathian Mountains, Romania
The Fagaras Mountains host one of Europe’s largest contiguous areas of high nature value forests with healthy populations of wildlife species: Beautiful forests habitats, an important number af large carnivores, a small population of golden eagles, a formerly good but rapidly declining population of capercaillie, and good populations of birds and insects, naturally home to central European mountain forests. The only mammals missing from the area are bison and beavers, both keystone species with a positive impact upon biodiversity.
