A NEW PROJECT FOR EDUCATION AND ACTIVISM FOR BRAȘOV’S URBAN NATURE
From 7–9 September 2023, Brașov will host the Green Cities Forum (FOV)—the largest environmental sustainability event in Romania.
As part of FOV, Propark – Foundation for Protected Areas will implement the project “Education and Activism for Brașov’s Urban Nature”, carried out with the support of Brașov City Hall. The project includes a series of activities and workshops designed for Brașov residents of all ages, aiming to inspire active participation in environmental protection. More specifically, it encourages citizens to learn about and get involved in the management of urban green spaces in their city.
This initiative builds on the “Brașov – A Model for Urban Green Spaces” project, funded under the same program in 2022. In the coming years, we plan to continue developing projects that improve environmental conditions for urban biodiversity and create more biodiversity-rich “green islands.”
Three Days of Engagement: 7–9 September
1. Environmental education activities designed to engage citizens in three key steps: Know – Love – Act!
2. Shrub planting to improve environmental conditions and urban biodiversity—conducted with the participation of FOV attendees.
3. Finishing touches to horticultural arrangements created through the planting sessions, carried out by our green space specialists.
Where and How
· Shrub planting will take place in selected residential areas between apartment buildings in Brașov, previously identified for intervention.
· Environmental education activities for the general public will take place in one of the official FOV venues designated by Brașov City Hall—Bulevardul Eroilor, in front of the “Unirea” National College.
Over three days, we will set up a tent camp hosting environmental education workshops: Escape Tent, Wild Immersion, and Shrub Roulette.
Escape Tent
A team escape game where participants must solve a series of nature-themed challenges to achieve their goal.
· Inspired by the “escape room” concept, the objective here is to escape the tent by finding the natural elements needed to “save the planet.”
· Recommended for children aged 9–14, including their parents.
· Duration: ~1 hour.
· Nature-based tasks include:
o Food chains
o Animal diets
o Tree species identification
· Main learning objectives:
o Bear diet
o Species from national parks
o Diets of various birds
o Other adaptable themes depending on location
Wild Immersion
Using VR technology, participants will take a virtual journey through natural areas near Brașov, followed by discussions about the importance of nature.
· Maximum group size: 15 participants.
Shrub Roulette
Participants spin a wooden roulette to select the shrub species they will plant during the activity. They then receive a voucher directing them to the planting site, where two specialists will assist with the planting according to a predefined landscaping plan.
These planted shrub islands will become urban biodiversity hotspots, marked and announced so that local residents can join and contribute to ongoing environmental stewardship.
Join Us!
We warmly invite everyone to take part in this urban nature project. Participation is free on all days and for all workshops.
